Presentation Title:Block Configuration Tailoring and Lithim-ion Storage of Shear-Phase Niobium-Based Oixdes


Abstract:

The power output and charging rate of traditional lithium-ion batteries, which primarily depend on the rate capability of active materials, have struggled to meet the rapidly evolving demands of modern electronic devices and electric vehicles. For anodes, Wadsley-Roth shear-phase niobium-based oxides represent a critical breakthrough following mainstream materials such as graphite, lithium titanate, and silicon-carbon composites. However, the intrinsic highly ordered crystal structure of these materials suffers from low electronic conductivity, limited ion diffusion kinetics, and significant electrochemical phase transitions, resulting in practical rate performance that falls substantially short of theoretical expectations. To address these challenges, we have explored systematic synthesis processes and developed several feasible techniques for tailoring their intrinsic crystal structure. This has enabled the preparation of various novel shear-phase niobium-based oxides with disordered stacking of Block configurations, such as TiNbWO anodes featuring multi-domain coexistence (Energy Environ. Sci., 2024, 17, 6571-6581) and oxygen-deficient Nb25O62 anodes (Nano Energy, 2025, 142, 111236). Our investigations open up a new direction for expanding the existing family of shear-phase niobium-based oxide materials.



Bio:

Panpan Jing is an associate professor in School of Materials Science and Engineering at Shaanxi University of Science & Technology, Xi’an, China. He received his Ph.D. from Condensed Matter Physics of Lanzhou University in 2016. He was a visiting postdoctoral scholar and conducted the research under the supervision of Prof. Meilin Liu at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA. He serves as the head of the "Low-Dimensional Materials and Photoelectrochemical Technology Research Team" at Shaanxi University of Science & Technology and the "Advanced Electrochemical Energy Storage Technology Innovation Research Team" at the Shaanxi Laboratory of Advanced Materials. His current research focuses on developing critical materials and investigating fundamental mechanism involved with defects, crystallographic structures, ion diffusion and phase transition for electrochemical energy storage devices and photocatalysis. He has published high-impact academic papers in authoritative international journals in materials science, chemistry, and energy, includingEnergy Environ. Sci., Mater. Today, Nano-Micro Lett., Small, and Nano Energy. He has led several research projects, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China Youth Program, the Shaanxi Provincial Key R&D Program, the Shaanxi Provincial Natural Science Foundation Basic Research Plan.
